Hawk Rise Sanctuary

Hawk Rise Sanctuary, nestled in Linden, New Jersey, is a 95-acre ecological preserve that offers a surprising natural escape amidst an industrial backdrop. Established in 2012 through a collaborative effort between the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the city of Linden, and the New Jersey Audubon Society, the sanctuary transformed a former landfill into a thriving wetland complex. Visitors can explore approximately 1.5 miles of flat, accessible trails that wind through diverse habitats, including forested wetlands, grasslands, salt marshes, and the tidal Rahway River. The sanctuary is home to over 160 bird species, making it a prime spot for birdwatching enthusiasts. Educational programs and events, such as spring birding walks, are regularly offered by the New Jersey Audubon Society, providing opportunities for both adults and families to engage with nature. Open daily from sunrise to sunset, Hawk Rise Sanctuary invites all to experience its serene beauty and ecological significance.
